The global outcry against misinformation reached a crescendo towards the end of 2020. The reverberations reached Nigeria in 2021 especially after the #EndSars movement. Meta (previously Facebook) came under severe scrutiny for allegedly not doing enough to stop the spread of misinformation on its platforms in the country. There was rising impatience among key government officials, who wanted more draconian legislation that might negatively impact the business models of all the notable social media platforms, including, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta, in Nigeria.
