In Ghana, management of plastic waste is a huge challenge. Instead of a green environment, it is more common to find fields of plastic waste. During the rainy season, plastic waste is washed into gutters leading to flooding, severe destruction of properties and loss of lives. Beaches are strewn with plastic, including what gets washed up from the ocean. Since 2013 Stratcomm Africa has been employing the Ghana Garden and Flower Show as a behaviour change communication tool, creating awareness about plastic waste management for the protection of the environment and human health focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
