Message from the IPRA President: The time is now December 2024

(Comments)

Dear friends and colleagues,

This year was expected to bring significant challenges across the world. But the scale of global instability is striking. According to the Global Peace Index there are over 56 active conflicts, the highest number since World War II, involving 92 countries. The internationalisation of disputes is reshaping the geopolitical landscape.

How should PR react?

In such a volatile environment, the demands on the public relations profession to navigate these complexities have intensified. We require strategic agility, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and a commitment to ethical communication.

According to the European Communication Monitor PR is a rapidly evolving profession that drives our societies. The Monitor identifies three key challenges: the need for companies to deal with geopolitical risks; the adoption of artificial intelligence; and the learning practices of chief communication officers. If you ask me dealing with geopolitical risk is of greatest importance.

The need is urgent. The rewards are great. The time is short,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres while speaking to the press at the recent COP29 UN climate conference. Although he was referring to climate goals, I believe this urgency applies equally to other global issues.

What are we in IPRA doing to help?

In IPRA we learn, share, speak and gather around the issues with which our members are concerned. Make the most of your IPRA membership by joining and interacting with one of our Chapters. We have Chapters on Climate Change looking at issues such as greenwashing, on AI debating issues such as disinformation, and regional  Chapters discussing issues such as implementing global standards in The Philippines and the Alpe-Balkan-Adria region. Simply contact our Secretariat to get involved.

Stay well and if you are celebrating this month, have a wonderful holiday. See you in 2025!

Kind regards,

Nataša Pavlović Bujas

IPRA President 2024
