COP29: the UN climate conference in Baku is both important and in a difficult place

(Comments)

The 29th UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan this week will focus on the financing by wealthy countries of climate action required in poorer ones. This support is key. The latest UN emissions gap report suggests we’re under way to a global warming of at least 2.6° by the end of this century. This news comes as it has become clear the planet has failed the 1.5° target of the 2015 Paris agreement.

A transformation to a green economy helps to solve sustainability challenges. Alas sustainability is increasingly taking a back seat in the face of other corporate challenges and a rise in populism which disregards scientific evidence.

What David Attenborough said in 2020 has never been truer: “Saving the planet is now a communications issue.”  Public Relations practitioners around the world have a key role to play to tackle the climate crisis. We in PR need to talk about climate more than ever. As the leading global network for PR professionals in their personal capacity, IPRA is supporting the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development via our climate and environmental categories within the annual Golden World Awards,  webinars and a dedicated climate change Chapter.

As part of the climate change Chapter’s activities, we are looking in 2025 at an event to help understand a key communication component: the science behind climate change. Please contact the Secretariat and join the Climate Chapter to discuss this and more. While we hope for progress in Baku, IPRA will continue to do its part to save the planet.
